History
On October 28, 1927, when the Arkadelphia Street Improvement Department removed the fireplug from the middle of the sidewalk at the front entrance, they left an unobstructed walkway to the fountain on the South Lawn. For several years, this “blemish” had marred the beauty of the front entrance; it was an annoyance, to say the least. It was “always in the way” but especially so for “couples who were too much interested in something else to notice just where they were going” as they strolled along. But now, after the city workers had filled in the hole with concrete, the “blemish” was gone and the front entrance greatly improved.
