History

The Martin B. Garrison Activity and Conference Center serves as a central location for campus meetings and services. The long, L-shaped building enclosed and combined the Student Union and Day Armory buildings. The Garrison, as it is more commonly known, was the home of the school newspaper, the Oracle; the school yearbook, the Star; and the campus radio station, KSWH, before they were eliminated in 2022. The Reddie Bookstore, the Reddie Cafe, and retail outlets Starbucks and Chick-fil-a remain. Also located in the Garrison is the Center for Career Development, the Student Engagement Center, a commuter lounge, an eSports lounge area and a computer lab for student use.

Renovations completed in 2014 sought to concentrate student services into the Garrison and be more efficient. The bookstore was completely remodeled. The Starbucks coffee shop and the Chick-fil-A location that opened in 2013 were expanded. Additions to the second floor included a new technology center and a commuter student lounge for nonresident students. A substation for the HSU campus police was also located in the center. The 300-seat lecture hall was redone with more lighting and new technology for large classes, presentations and movies. The most dramatic change was the new Grand Ballroom, transformed from what was formerly the Day Gym. The large meeting space can accommodate 500 people for a dinner and can be subdivided into two rooms.
