History

On September 25, 1975, the Trustees recommended that some of the unexpended physical plant funds be used to finance the construction of a greenhouse, which had been deleted from the bid for renovating McElhannon Hall because of the lack of funds at that time. Roper IBG Company of Illinois was awarded the contract on February 26, 1976. However, the greenhouse was not ready for use until October, 1977, because of numerous delays, such as returning metal beams incorrectly cut and settling for less expensive equipment. It was constructed of red brick, glass windows, and a glass roof in a metal framework. The 35-foot square greenhouse has a gravel floor and concrete walks; it was equipped with an automatic control system to regulate temperature and humidity. The greenhouse cost $48,861.
