History
A gift of “three beautiful lawn swings” was donated in October, 1922, by Henry K. Wellborn, piano tuner and “manager of the well-known orchestra which bears his name.” Using the headline, “Campus Dates Are Encouraged,” the writer in theOracle rhetorically rhapsodized: “What gift could be more pleasing to a bunch of love-sick co-eds? What gift could fill the murmuring zephyrs in the giant oaks of our campus with more music and enchantment? What gift could make love seem more blind? I dare say none.” Knowing that some were more deeply affected by the “affliction” than others, Wellborn dedicated the three swings to Edith Leidy, Mary Catherine Patterson, and Eliza Harris. However, since “they are very unselfish girls,” the rest of the students knew that they too would “have liberal use of this splendid gift”.
