History

On October 8, 1979, the Trustees approved the purchase of what was then known as the Stone-Phillips property from Ruth Eloise Stone Bass and Mary Jo Stone Mann. On the 3.18-acre plot located across Henderson Street from the South Campus were four houses, including what is now the Captain Henderson House; the home of Alvin Stone at 1027 Henderson Street; and at 1021, the former home of long-time Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds J. B. “Dad” Garrett. His signature was still faintly perceptible in the concrete of the front walkway in 2025. Surviving photos of the house date it to at least the mid 1920s.

The house eventually came in to the possession of Garrett's daughter Roma Meier, and had been known as the Meier House ever since. It served as the office of Student Support Services. Deteriorating conditions due to prolonged neglect and lack of maintenance caused the College to abandon the house in 2022. The Meier House was razed in 2025 to make way for the Reddie Recreation Complex. A painting of this house in its better days hangs in Huie Library next to a window from which the house itself was visible. All that remains of Meier House is its Art Deco-inspired porch railing, which at some point had been added to the back porch of the Capatain Henderson House
