History

After the destruction of Goodloe Hall in 1928, the editor of the Oracle, who had warned the men in December about leaving their gas at full blast in the dormitory, again warned the students who had moved into the Academy Building that they must be still more "careful about leaving the gas heaters burning at full blast” and they should exert even greater care in the disposal of cigarettes and matches, for “a single spark may be sufficient to cause a lot of trouble” in the two-story frame structure.

And a single spark was sufficient, for the College suffered the loss of the third building by fire about a year later. On Friday night, March 15, 1929, the Academy Building caught fire about 7 p.m. “while the occupants were at supper in the college dining room some distance away, and was past control when the fire department arrived.” Twelve boys rooming upstairs “lost everything they had except the clothing they wore,” but the people of Arkadelphia “gladly responded to the call to reimburse them in most part for their losses”. Mrs. Nettie Alice Cobb, alumna and supervisor of the College Dining Hall, and her family, who resided on the lower floor of the house, saved their piano and a few other things, only partially covered by insurance.

In 1934, the College constructed new tennis courts on this site.
