History

For the seventh major building during this period, the Board awarded a contract on February 4, 1967, for a new high-rise dormitory. Similar in plan and appearance to Smith Hall, this new dormitory of red brick was built to the east of the old Haygood Stadium, and likely on the site of the original Haygood Athletic Field. Building on this location was possible because the College had purchased a property of about 58 acres that joined the northern boundary of the campus from the Arkadelphia Country Club for $300,000 in 1965, and moved athletic facilities to the new site.

Capable of housing 448 men, the dormitory was opened in September, 1968, for a cost of about $1,446,594. On November 15, 1967, the Trustees named the new dormitory Farrar Newberry Hall to honor a well-known former student, teacher, active alumnus, and friend of the College. The College then renovated Womack and Foster Hall, which had previously housed men, to house women students in 1968-69.

According to plans of the Board of Trustees on November 30, 1966, Newberry Hall was the first of three or more high-rise dormitories eventually to be constructed on the site of the old Haygood Stadium. However, this never came to fruition, and the area is now home to the Caplinger Airway Science Center and its parking lot.

In 2022, Newberry was abandoned for possible sale to Ouachita Baptist University.
