History
In 1999, Henderson commissioned a renovation of the existing science building and the construction of an addition that would meet the College's needs well into the 21st century.
The design used a new planetarium as the focal point for the three building parts as well as for the south lawn. With a 26.9 foot diameter dome and state of the art Digitalis Epsilon Digital Projection system, the Reynolds Planetarium is one of the largest and most sophisticated in the state of Arkansas. The Digitalis Epsilon system can project stars, planets, galaxies, and virtually anything else onto the dome, with surround sound to provide an immerse experience for the audience. In addition to being a learning tool for Henderson students, it is also open to the public for shows, star-gazing events, field trips, and private functions.
The building is named for Donald W. Reynolds (1906-1993). Mr. Reynolds was the founder and principal owner of a large media group which, at the time of his death, included 52 daily newspapers, 10 outdoor advertising companies, five cable television companies, and one television station. The Donald W. Reynolds Foundation, established in 1954, donated the funds for the construction of the Science Center.
