History

The generosity of the Simonson family to Henderson State University allowed for the creation of the Simonson Biological Field Station, which opened in 2011. The Field Station is a three-story, 7,200 sq. ft. log structure that contains student dormitory rooms, dining and kitchen space, classrooms, a research laboratory, and guest rooms. It is located on 184 acres of wooded upland forest on long-term lease from the United States Army Corps of Engineers. The mission of the field station is to support the HSU Biology Department in pursuit of scientific education and research that advances understanding of the natural world and promotes informed stewardship of the Earth. This includes undergraduate student research, field-based courses, educational outreach, facilities and field sites for visiting researchers, and events.

The Field Station contains a room named for Biology professor Adelphia Meyer Basford.

When the Biology program was eliminated in 2022, the College announced that they were exploring other options for the building and surrounding land.
