History
In the autumn of 1903, the Trustees approved further spending to beautify the campus. They paid $41 to the Winchester Nursery for trees; $4 for four loads of fertilizer for the trees; $4 to Tom Miller for five days' labor to set out the trees; $7.35 for lumber to box the trees; and $6 for boxing the trees. Of the surviving trees on the campus today, a definite geometric arrangement of those near the Holly Grove reflects the care in the planning of this plot of beautification.
Acording to campus legend, the female students named the trees after their beaus.
